Wellbeing Conceptual
This chapter argues that social-emotional skills should be understood as a constitutive element of teachers' professional ethos, rather than as an optional add-on to classroom technique. Drawing on research in emotional intelligence, teacher professional development, and teacher ethos, we position social-emotional competencies—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management, and responsible decision making—as core to what it means to act as a teacher. Teachers operate in emotionally demanding environments in which the quality of their relationships with students, colleagues, and parents directly shapes learning, wellbeing, and school climate. We review evidence on how teachers' social-emotional skills impact student outcomes, teacher retention, and the moral tone of schools, and we discuss how such skills interact with teachers' values, identity, and commitments to students' growth. The chapter then addresses the implications for initial teacher education, ongoing professional development, and school leadership. Specifically, we argue that social-emotional learning (SEL) must be explicitly integrated into teacher training programs and into in-service professional development, with systematic attention to assessment, feedback, and institutional support. The chapter closes with practical recommendations for educators and policymakers on cultivating social-emotional ethos as an everyday professional practice in schools.
