Workplace bullying encompasses detrimental negative micro-political interactions involving aggressive interpersonal behaviors. This review positions harassment based on protected characteristics as a constituent subset of workplace bullying — distinct, but inextricably linked to broader workplace predation. Meta-analyses demonstrate robust connections between bullying exposure and compromised health outcomes, with education sectors showing elevated rates. This scoping review examined 3,179 records and charted 140 papers on workplace bullying in higher education institutions (HEIs) from 2003–2023, with 47 papers undergoing full-text review. Key findings highlight that HEIs present organizational factors conducive to bullying. The review identifies priorities for future research, particularly addressing the pernicious effects of neoliberal governance models as well as the complex and intersecting power relations that are unique to higher education.
